This sculpture by young Tarantine would sit in the middle of a large room encased in marble, dedicated only to social bathing. Pierre Alexandre Schoenewerk (1820-1885) was a Romantic French sculptor and the son of an immigrant tailor.
Young Tarantine would lie resplendent, lit by a single shaft of light coming from a single window in the domed ceiling. Our houseguests in our Italian renaissance palace would take time to bathe in water infused with lily and myrrh.
The bathing rooms would be a place for beauty treatments, personal reflection and poetry readings.
